Salomon Sentinel & BBR Sale
We've got two fantastic all mountain skis from Salomon on sale this week - the Salomon Sentinel and Salomon BBR 7.9 - both for only $299!
The 2012 Salomon Sentinel is a solid all mountain charger designed for skiers who want a ski they can depend on at speed regardless of the conditions. With metal laminate and a stout construction, the Sentinel will blast through crud and rail on the groomers. Tip rocker makes for quick turn initiation, and combined with a waist width of 95 mm, it's great in powder too.
Here's what Sierra Jim had to say:
"The Sentinel is a pretty stiff ski and normally, that doesn't bode well for soft snow performance. The factor that allows the Sentinel to ski better in soft snow than you'd expect is that despite the overall stiff flex, that flex is pretty balanced. The Sentinel has enough flex in the back half of the ski that it will come around at the end of the turn better than skis with an overly stiff tail. The tip rocker eases turn initiation in rough snow but it is moderate enough that it probably has little effect when the snow is deep. The rocker is noticeable on hard packed snow only at lower edge angles. The width range of 94-100mm is a great daily driver category for the western skier. The Sentinel is one of the leaders in this category and one of the very best skis in this (or any) category at blasting through heavy crud."
The 2012 Salomon BBR 7.9 is a totally different shape, combining a wide tapered tip, tip rocker and a tapered tail. It's the perfect ski for intermediate skier who wants to venture off the groomed runs into powder, trees and even crud. The unique shape makes new terrain easily accessable without giving up good carving on the groomers. It may not be as stiff as hard-charging pros want, but that's not.
Here's what Sierra Jim had to say:
"The major effect of the huge tip is that the BBR engages at the tip with the barest thought of an ankle roll. The huge taper angle allows the tail to skid easily at the finish of the turn. This gives the skier the ability to either tighten up the turn radius or open up the turn radius just by ankle movements. While this can be done on other skis too, it is dramatically easier and more effective on the BBR.
The BBR is not the ski for the gnar eater or the cliff jumper. Rather, it is a ski that can make new terrain available to mid to high level skiers that have maybe been stuck in a groomer rut. This skier may want to sample some off trail conditions and maybe ski a little powder but he does not want to give up a comfortable feel on groomers. The BBR is way more comfortable on typical everyday terrain than the uber-wide rockered powder skis."
These are both great skis aimed at different ability levels, but both fill the roll of a "quiver of one" ski that can tackle most conditions you'll find on the hill. You really can't go wrong with these skis at only $299.
