Ski Tuning and Services
Downhill Ski, Nordic Ski & Snowboard Tuning Services
Our Service Philosophy
At Start Haus, our philosophy is simple: We believe that every skier, regardless of ability, deserves the performance of a World Cup tune.
We’ve invested in the world’s most advanced machinery - the Wintersteiger Jupiter, Trim Jet and Wax Future - because we believe in the science of precision. We want your edges to be accurate to the tenth of a degree and your bases to be saturated with infrared technology.
As much as we rely on precision and technology we believe in the soul of the craft, because technology is only as good as the technician operating it. That’s why every piece of gear that passes through our machines ends up on our benches for a final hand-check. We aren't just a "factory" shop; we are a local service center where we treat your gear like it’s our own. Our goal is to remove the variables of your equipment so you can focus entirely on the feeling of the perfect turn.

The Wintersteiger Jupiter at Start Haus
At Start Haus in Truckee, California, we are committed to providing the highest level of service for all your winter gear. That’s why we’ve introduced the Wintersteiger Jupiter, a cutting-edge, fully automated tuning system designed to deliver unmatched precision. This state-of-the-art machine represents a significant leap forward from traditional tuning methods, utilizing a fully digital system to ensure your equipment is optimized for the snow.
Digital Edge Angle Adjustments: One of the standout features of the Jupiter is its digital edge control. Unlike older technologies, limited by fixed increments, our new system allows for incredibly precise edge angle adjustments. This level of customization ensures that whether you are a World Cup racer or a weekend enthusiast, your edges are tuned exactly to your specifications.
Base Grinding: The Jupiter allows for variable pressure technology during the grinding process. As the stone moves across the base of your skis, the machine can automatically adjust the pressure along a curve, allowing us to pinpoint the exact pressure needed throughout the length of the ski for a consistent and professional finish. The Jupiter also brings incredible efficiency to our shop with its dual-grind feature, which allows us to pre-grind a pair of skis simultaneously, doubling our production speed compared to previous methods. This versatility extends to all types of gear; the machine is fully equipped to handle snowboards and even Nordic skis. For Nordic skiers, the Jupiter can pattern the entire length of a skate ski or intelligently avoid the skin and scale sections on classic skis to preserve their performance.
Sidewall Planer: To ensure a professional, factory-level finish, the Jupiter includes a sidewall planer with a trim-cut feature to remove excess material and a ceramic disc polishing unit that deburrs the ski with linear precision.
Final Hand Work: While the machine produces a finish that is nearly "ready-to-ride," our expert techs still bring every piece of gear to the bench for final hand-work - checking the equipment, detuning, and deburring-to guarantee it is perfect before it hits the snow.
Wintersteiger Infrared Waxing by Wax Future
At Start Haus, we know that a great tune is only as good as the wax that makes it glide. To provide the ultimate glide and base protection, we utilize the Wintersteiger Wax Future, a high-end infrared waxing unit that goes far beyond traditional hot wax. This technology is designed for those who want their wax to last longer and perform better, whether you are touring the backcountry or racing a World Cup.
The secret to the Wax Future is its infrared heating technology. Unlike traditional waxing irons that apply high heat to the surface of the ski, the infrared lamps penetrate the base material deeply and evenly without physical contact. This non-contact heating allows the pores of the ski base to open up more effectively, drawing the wax deep into the material rather than just letting it sit on the surface.
This process results in several key benefits for your equipment. Because the wax is absorbed deeper into the base, it is significantly more durable, meaning you can enjoy more days on the mountain before needing your next service. In addition, the uniform heating prevents the risk of "hot spots" that can occur with hand irons, ensuring your bases remain flat and healthy.
The Wax Future is compatible with all types of skis and snowboards and is the gold standard for deep-base onditioning and saturation.
Wintersteiger Trim Jet Racing Model
While our automated systems handle the heavy lifting, the Wintersteiger Trim Jet Racing model is our go-to for achieving a world-class edge finish. This machine is specifically engineered for high-performance and race-level tuning, utilizing Wintersteiger’s legendary Ceramic Disc Finish technology. This is the same technology used by over 90% of ski manufacturers worldwide to ensure that brand-new skis have that perfect, factory-sharp feel.
What sets the Trim Jet Racing model apart is its incredible stability and customization. It features an advanced centering unit and an additional feed arm that stabilizes the ski during the process, eliminating any vibration. This allows us to achieve a level of edge geometry and mirror-like polish that is impossible to replicate by hand or with standard belt grinders.
With infinitely variable speed control and digital software, our techs can "tweak" the grind for every specific discipline- whether you need an aggressive, biting edge for icy slalom courses or a smooth, predictable feel for all-mountain carving. The result is an edge that is not only sharper but also more durable, keeping gear high-performing for longer periods on the snow. It’s the final step in ensuring that when you pick up your gear from Start Haus, it’s not just tuned- it’s optimized for your style.
Binding Mount Calibration & Testing
Your bindings and the way they interface with your boots are the most critical piece of safety equipment you own. Here at Start Haus, we don't leave their performance to guesswork, we utilize advanced Binding Calibration & Testing Machines to ensure your setup is both secure and reliable – that your bindings will release when expected.
When we mount your bindings, we use the machine to simulate the forces of a fall, verifying that the binding releases exactly when it should, based on your height, weight, age, and skier type. Over time, binding springs can lose tension and boot soles can wear down, both of which change your release values. By electronically testing your gear, we provide a printed "report card" of your binding’s performance, giving you the peace of mind to charge hard knowing your equipment has your back.

FAQ
For the best performance and safety, we recommend a full tune every 5 to 10 days on the snow. However, this depends on the conditions; if you are skiing on man-made or hard pack snow, your edges will dull and your wax will wear off much faster than in soft powder. A good rule of thumb is to bring them in whenever you feel a lack of grip on hardpack or if your bases start to look "hairy" or gray.
Yes. While most equipment comes with a "factory tune," it is often a generic setting. Additionally, skis can settle or slightly warp during shipping and storage. We ecommend bringing new gear in for a "New Ski/Board Prep" to ensure the bases are perfectly flat, the edges are set to your specific style, and the base is deeply saturated with wax.
A traditional hand wax uses a hot iron to melt wax onto the surface. Our Wintersteiger Wax Future uses infrared light to heat the base without contact. This allows the pores of the base to open wider and absorb wax much deeper into the material. The result is a faster glide that lasts significantly longer than a standard iron-on wax.
That "chalky" or "ashy" look is a sign of base oxidation. It means your base is dry and has lost its lubrication. When a base stays dry for too long, it can become brittle and lose its ability to hold wax. Regular waxing keeps the base "hydrated," protected, and fast.
While you can do basic "touch-ups" with a gummy stone to remove burrs, achieving a precise, consistent edge angle is difficult to do by hand. Our Trim Jet Racing and Jupiter machines use ceramic disc technology to sharpen edges to within a fraction of a degree. This precision provides a level of "bite" on ice that simply can't be matched by hand-filing.
If you hit a rock and see a scratch that reveals the wood or metal inside the ski (rather than just the black P-Tex base), that is a core shot. It is urgent to get these repaired immediately. If water gets into the core, it can cause the wood to rot or the layers to delaminate, which can permanently ruin your equipment.
In the Lake Tahoe area, our snow often has high moisture content, famously known as
"Sierra Cement." This heavy, wet snow creates significant suction between your base and the snow. To combat this, we use the Wintersteiger Jupiter to grind a specific base structure (a pattern of tiny grooves) into your gear. This structure acts like a tire tread, breaking the surface tension and allowing you to glide freely instead of feeling "stuck" in the slush.
Tahoe temperatures can fluctuate wildly-from a frozen morning at the summit to 40°F slush at the base by noon. Because of this, a standard "all-temp" wax often fails. We use infrared waxing to saturate the base with temperature-specific waxes that handle high-moisture snow. If the forecast calls for a classic Tahoe spring day, we can apply a "warm" wax with high water-repellency to keep you from slowing down in the flats.
Early in the season or during dry spells, resorts rely heavily on man-made snow. Man-made snow is essentially tiny pellets of ice, which are much more abrasive than natural snowflakes. This "sandpapers" your edges and dries out your bases quickly. If you’re riding mostly man-made snow, we recommend a Ceramic Disc Finish on our Trim Jet Racing model every 4–5 days to maintain that essential "bite" on the ice.
Yes! "Sticky" snow is caused by a combination of suction (too much water) and dirt/pollen that accumulates in the snowpack during the spring. Our professional tunes include a base cleaning to remove contaminants and a coarse stone-grind structure to channel water away. Pairing this with a fluorinated or spring-specific wax via our Wax Future system is the best way to keep your speed through the spring slush.
P-tex is a good option for small scratches on the base of your skis or snowboard, but it's not a strong solution for deeper gouges, or core shots, that expose the core. The common "candlestick" method of melting P-tex into a deep scratch doesn't create a good bond and often cracks and falls out after a few runs. For more durable repairs, a base weld is the way to go. This technique uses a specialized material and process that creates a stronger, longer-lasting bond with the base material, ensuring the repair holds up to more aggressive riding.
Not sure what a core shot is? A core shot is damage to the underside of skis that expose the core beneath the base that should be repaired to prevent further damage.
