Why do base structures matter? Well, first and foremost, they reduce drag. Different patterns excel in different snow conditions, fine, cold snow, course, warm wet snow - whatever the case may be.

Basically, skis need to ride on a film of water, so in cold snow, for example, a fine structure with the right shape will hold water longer, since little water is available in those conditions. In warm, wet snow, the structure needs to move excess water away from the base to reduce suction.
